Free Music Tuesday

Free Music…THAT should get your attention….

It takes time to keep up with new music.  Even when I worked in radio, and had a slew of CD’s piled on my desk daily,  it was still hard to to keep up with the hot and new.

Now, as a civilian, I have several sources I follow to find out about the new and the cool…and sometimes the cool isn’t so new in regards to the date, but it’s new to my ears.

One source, believe it or not,  is Amazon.com

Every Tuesday Amazon comes out with a “Download Newsletter” which features new releases, free downloads and great deals, like  $5 albums.  Just as a side note-for some  reason, that I’ve always accepted  yet have no idea why, new music is almost always released on Tuesdays.  I should probably look into that.

After you download the Amazon Music Dowloader, a pretty painless procedure, you are on your way. There are several decent  features in  downloading tunes  from Amazon.

First of all the, music you download from Amazon goes right to Itunes-which is the only digital media player I use, although I know Amazon heads right to Windows Media Player if that’s how you roll.

Amazon also has a wide variety of free music. EVERY DAY there’s a new song to be had for zero cents.  Today I procured a song by a band called White Lies called “Bigger Than Us (Album Version)

Will I like them?  I don’t know, time will tell.  But I have found some  very decent music in the past that I might not have been exposed to otherwise.   Sometimes you have to give it a shot, you just never know.  It’s hard to find the Amazon collection of all the free music bunched together, but for the most part you can probably find it here. Search around the site, you can preview everything, so why not?

While free is good, it can sometimes  trip you up. You end up with alot of stuff you decide you don’t want.  But that’s what the DELETE button is for.

Music is so subjective, we all like what we like, no rhyme or reason and one person’s melody is another’s mound of mush.  Sometimes my criteria  for snagging a song is as simple as I like the title or band name.  For example, This song, by Dirty Vegas “Electric Love”? I just LOVED that the band is called Dirty Vegas. Yep, I’m that easy.

Here’s some other freebies I’ve recently downloaded, that still should be available on Amazon.

Tapes ‘N Tapes “Freak Out”.  I ended up snagging a few more by this group, like this one “One In The World,” which has a GREAT Talking Heads,  or Clap Your Hands Say Yeah vibe and is quickly becoming on of my” Top Songs of Jan 2011.”

I also rediscovered Seattle Band Two Loons for Tea a great tune called “Blue Suit”from a free sampler Amazon was offering.  I’ve heard of this band before, and it’s quite possible I have met someone who works with them,  but it’s a little hazy.

Another story for another day. But I did find quite a few good songs on the sampler, which is still free actually: Sarathan Records Indie Sampler

Discovering new music is never a bad thing. There is so much out there to explore, adding a few new tunes to your old dusty collection will  jazz thing up.

Trust me, I’m a Recovering DJ
